San Francisco to Saigon: The Extended Photographic Journey

A fascinating view of San Fransisco.

Here are some rather bad pictures of the airport in Hong Kong. The lighting was weird, so I tried a couple different settings, but still only a few pictures turned out:

This huge sign is outside the airport in Saigon. I was on flight UA 869.

The staircase in my house:

The house is much bigger than I expected and also a lot more like an apartment building. My room is about four or five flights up.

House regulations and things, thankfully provided in English. The translation is pretty fun.

Various pictures of my room:

You'll notice the shower does not have a stall. The bathroom more or less is the shower stall. There's a drain in the corner.

And finally Saigon itself:

You'll notice a very common theme in these pictures is the extraordinary abundance of wires.

I also bought a sandwich. It looked like this:

I don't have a clue what was in it, except I'm pretty sure I saw the woman crack an egg in there. At any rate it was very good. I ordered it by smiling and nodding when she pointed to it.

  1. Interesting. . . thanks for the pictures--I am enjoying every detail. You're doing great keeping us in the loop! Love, Mom

  2. Hey Aaron, this is Mike. Pretty nice hotel there! The shower thing was the same in India. Dude, I think you're almost never allowed to take pictures in airports. It's a security thing.

  3. I actually got caught once, but I had only taken maybe two pictures. After that I just kind of avoided anyone who looked like a security official.

And just to clarify, the large hotel-like building I took a picture of is not where I'm staying. It's just a big building nearby. I can take an exterior picture of the house tomorrow.

  4. This might be random but what is the time difference between here and there?

  5. Ah, I finally figured out how to post a comment.

The humidity thing was the same way in Hawaii--that it's the first thing that hits you as you get off the plane. That's what the leis are for: they cool you off (I guess they refrigerate them or something; I don't remember).

Ironically enough, the pictures of Vietnam seem to remind me of San Francisco, which shows my lack of experience with the world. But, yeah, the Engrish on the signs is pretty great.

I can't remember what else I should comment on because the comment box is on the comment page and not the blog page.

Oh, I think it's going to call me Hannabart Pekopon when I say this. Ah well.

  6. Can you shoot a close up of the laquer and inlay piece with the calendar on it in your room? It looks similar to a couple of pieces we own that were made in Vietnam.

  7. I have a very similar picture of the plane I took to Aberdeen my Junior year.

And that wicker chair you have? I found that exact same one in my friend's apartment complex. Nice pictures!

You should make a point to take pictures of particularly hilarious English-translation signs.
